LIST OF SCIENTIFIC WORKS

The Armenian Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry has a short history, but excellent results, which would be the envy of an institution with a longer lifespan. Scientific creativity is a complex matter, but the staff of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Armenian Republic, under the leadership of the remarkable researcher Grant Petrovich Petrosyan, turned out to be able not only to master this matter, but most importantly, to translate, put the theoretical provisions into useful practical conclusions and, on the basis of an integrated approach, solve the most difficult task of creating cultivated fertile soils on the basis of "dead" solonchaks. Soda solonchaks differ little from the primary, barren parent rocks of the dry steppe, which also contain a significant amount of sodium salts. And now this barren land in the hands of wonderful researchers becomes fruitful and annually gives its fruits to people, we examined with great attention the crops of various crops, beautiful gardens and tasted their fruits.

An original and comprehensive approach allowed the team led by G.P. Petrosyan to create a new ground, i.e. Institute scientists showed in their fields how to intensify the soil-forming process and achieve brilliant results in a short period of time under the conditions of severe natural factors. Without exaggeration, we can say that the day is not far off when the technology of creating fertile soils on the basis of solonchaks, developed by the Armenian Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, is widely used not only in our country, but throughout the world.

REVIEW ON G.P. PETROSYAN'S SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS

Scientific institutions and qualified personnel are successfully developing in Armenia in the field of soil science, water and chemical soil reclamation, hydraulic structures, fertilizers, irrigated agriculture, and agroforestry. Scientific experimental and experimental field studies by Armenian scientists in the field of complex reclamation of soda solonchaks (vertical and deep horizontal drainage, acidification, capital leaching, leaching irrigation, master crops, etc.) have gained all-Union recognition and world significance. This can be judged both by the size of the achieved harvests of grain, grapes, fruits, herbs, and by the growing number of Soviet and foreign specialists who come to Armenia to get acquainted with the successes achieved. The main merit in this belongs to the famous Soviet scientist G.P. Petrosyan.

During his many years of scientific activity, G.P. Petrosyan published 80 scientific papers, the vast majority of which are devoted to the issues of melioration of saline soils.

Carried out under his leadership and direct participation for more than 25 years, complex experimental studies are aimed at revealing the genesis of soda solonetzes, solonchaks, developing methods for their reclamation and measures for the agricultural development of reclaimed soils. To a certain extent, these studies are unique and widely known both in our country and abroad, because devoted to the most difficult soda-saline soils for melioration.

The scientific works of G.P. Petrosyan clearly demonstrate how closely theoretical research and original scientific ideas are combined with their experimental confirmation and consistent introduction into production.

The diversity and purposefulness of scientific publications indicates the author's comprehensive approach to solving the most difficult problem - the revival of the "dead land" of deserts and semi-deserts,

G.P. Petrosyan is the author of articles devoted to deep theoretical studies of the genesis of saline soils of the Ararat Plain, their water-salt regime, mineralogical composition, origin, redistribution, accumulation of salts and, in particular, soda.

According to the articles of P.P. Petrosyan, one can trace how the institute headed by him developed and introduced into production the method of reclamation and development of soda solonetzes-salt marshes using spent sulfuric acid and iron sulphate. The author presents a technology for the development of saline lands, systems of machines and an economic justification. From his works it can be seen that the author is not inclined to unfounded statements and reinforces his position with clear facts, figures and extensive industrial experience.

A number of his scientific publications are devoted to the development of issues of improving the water-physical properties, nutritional regime, increasing the biological activity and the degree of cultivation of reclamation soils, i.e. measures contributing to further desalinization of the soil profile, increasing their fertility.

In his publications, the author, on the basis of rich factual material, convincingly proved the full possibility of preventing secondary salinization of irrigated soils during the construction and use of an efficiently functioning drainage-collector system, compliance with the recommended irrigation regime and developed agrotechnical measures.

In a series of works, the author draws the attention of agricultural and water management authorities to the issue of the inadmissibility of a simplified approach to the issue of melioration and agricultural use of reclaimed soils. In particular, he opposes the practice of distributing reclaimed soils among many farms, proposing the creation of large specialized enterprises. Revealing the mistakes of design organizations, he strongly recommends consistently implementing an integrated approach to the development and use of reclaimed soils. Based on the factual material, G.P. Petrosyan opposes the construction of shallow drainage

A number of the author's publications convincingly show the economic feasibility of developing solonetzes-salt marshes of the Ararat Plain and the fastest return on investments spent on land reclamation. Based on many years of field research on the water-salt regime of reclaimed soils and the state of cultivated crops, the author proved the possibility of reducing leaching rates and accelerating the introduction of reclaimed soils into agricultural circulation through their further desalination by applying irrigation with overestimated rates under the cover of crops. This proposal of the author made it possible to reduce the reclamation period by a year and significantly reduce the cost of land reclamation.

G.P. Petrosyan's research established high prospects for the cultivation of grapes and fruit lands, alfalfa, rose geranium, early potatoes and melons on reclaimed lands. In published works, the most high-yielding varieties are recommended for production.   Much attention is paid to the issues of salt tolerance and adaptation of plants. A new provision has been established that at a certain concentration of sodium ions in the soil, the latter has a positive effect on the taste of fruits and berries, the formation of sugars, essential oils, etc. and favorably affects the aroma and bouquet of dessert wines. Metabolic disorders in plants under conditions of excessive salinity are considered both from the point of view of the specific effect of soil salt ions and taking into account the biological nature of plants. Therefore, in the author's publications, special attention is paid to the chemistry of soil salinity, the level of standing and the chemistry of groundwater, and their influence on the growth and development of plants, productivity, and the nature of the placement of root systems. All these issues are considered in publications at a high scientific level.

Summarizing the review of the studies of the published works, one can see that the author solved the problem of melioration of soda saline soils and agricultural development of reclaimed lands in an original, purposeful and comprehensive way.

Strict and steady implementation of the reclamation and agronomic complex, the developed method, is the key to success. This is evidenced by the stable development of solonchaks, carried out by the Reclamation Trust in the Ararat Plain under the supervision and consultations of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, headed by G.P. Petrosyan. Here you can see beautiful productive fields on the site of malicious salt marshes in the past.

G.P. Petrosyan is an active propagandist of the achievements of Soviet science and the introduction of their results into production. This is evidenced by the published texts of reports presented by the author at numerous all-Union and international symposiums, congresses, meetings and exhibitions.

Describing the scientific works of G.P. Petrosyan, one should note their theoretical depth, versatility, as well as the author’s great erudition and competence in each issue presented.

In the person of G.P. Petrosyan, Soviet agricultural science acquired an original, well-established scientist who made a great contribution to the problems of irrigated agriculture and soil reclamation. His works are not only being widely introduced and will be used in the Transcaucasus, but also in many other regions of Asia, South Africa, and America, where soda salinized soils are common.

G.P. Petrosyan fully deserves to be elected to the membership of VASKhNIL as a corresponding member in the specialty “Agriculture and chemicalization of agriculture”
