USDA Official Delegation
Feedback from the American delegation:
“We thought we were lucky to be members of the delegation that was supposed to visit Armenia. Having visited Armenia, we saw this with our own eyes. You have surpassed all our ideas about Armenian hospitality. You showed us what you are working on and told us about the problems you are facing. We were greatly impressed by the equipment of your institute and the professional level of both the research being carried out and your employees whom we encountered.
Please accept our sincere congratulations on the successful combination of laboratory research and practical work in the field, to solve important problems in the use of soil and water resources. This is our mutual desire to find ways to work together, to produce food that would help meet the needs of our peoples and the peoples of the world.
Without a doubt, such cooperation can be developed and actually carried out on the basis of our mutual efforts and goodwill, but especially thanks to your desire to succeed. We share Your wish.
In the science of saline soils there are areas where you excel, in others we or our colleagues excel. We think that joint cooperation would help the cause of progress.
We wish to conduct joint research with you on the movement of water, salts, temperature and gases at experimental stations in order to create a joint project. If we make the necessary efforts, the implementation of the project will be successful from the point of view of science. “To the Director of the Institute, Mr. G. Petrosyan. The Sulfur Institute is an International Sulfur Association that studies sulfur products and industry wastes containing phosphoric and sulfuric acids. We know that they are used as ameliorants to improve the water permeability of solonetzic soils, so we are interested in the experiments that are being carried out with these products to improve saline soils and improve the physical properties of the soil, lowering PH, the capacity of absorbed sodium, electrical conductivity, etc. What is the yield of crops on reclaimed soils.
We highly appreciate your experience and advice on the development of saline lands in your country. Of great interest to us is the possibility of using the above products for the design and development of saline soils. If it is difficult for you to inform us in the near future, please entrust this to the appropriate persons.
I express my deep gratitude for your help"

“Dear comrade Tarjumanyan Heinrich Vartanovich, Minister of Agriculture of the Armenian SSR. A Soviet-Czechoslovak conference was held in Yerevan on the topic "Increasing the efficiency of the work of scientists and agricultural specialists in the conditions of the scientific and technological revolution", organized on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Army, the Central Board of the Scientific and Technical Society for Agriculture of the USSR and Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Scientific and Technical Society for Agriculture in Prague.
We owe special gratitude to all the organizations and institutions in the Soviet Union that participated in the preparation and implementation of this conference. Our sincere gratitude goes, first of all... to the Armenian Republican Board of the NTO for Agriculture , headed by Dr. Petrosyan and his staff.
There is no other country in the world where you are met with such hospitality, courtesy, friendship at every step, as in your homeland illuminated by the sun. We were literally at every step surrounded by so much attention, concern and goodwill that we were not only amazed, but also touched. In all likelihood, such a rich history of your nation helped to grow such character traits through suffering. It seems that only in this country those who meet will be able at first glance to notice in the eyes what the passerby needs and help him even before he has time to express it. It is not surprising because, as we say goodbye to Armenia, we are filled with feelings of friendship for such a wonderful people, whom we managed to get to know during the several days of the conference.”
Libushe Gaykova, Secretary of the Central Committee of the ChNTO, Society for Agriculture
Josef Berdych, Secretary General of the Council of the Czech NTO
“Dear and dear friend, dear Grant Petrovich, allow us, after returning to our homeland from your beautiful country, to express our great gratitude to you for everything you have done for us, members of our delegation and for the participants in the Soviet-Czechoslovak conference in general.
We went to Yerevan filled with feelings of joy that we will again be able to see places so dear to our hearts and meet friends, first of all, with you, dear Grant Petrovich. However, all our expectations are far exceeded by all you have given us and we do not have enough words to fully express all the feelings and describe all the impressions that we will forever keep in our souls and express our gratitude for everything you have shown us.
Believe us that we are deeply grateful to you for all your subtle attention and effort to satisfy all our desires even before we had time to express them. It is difficult for us to properly express all the impressions aroused by your country, its ancient, thousand-year-old culture, its people building agriculture and socialism in general under difficult, unusual conditions for us, a country in which the most valuable good is man and his relations with others, where consider it the most common rule to treat another affectionately, friendly. This is how we got to know your Armenia, mainly thanks to you, dear Grant Petrovich.
How can we forget about such a country, such people, such friendship! We are proud that we are honored to be considered your friends, friends of a scientist known throughout the world for organizational whose abilities, as well as achievements, cause our deep respect. However, you are most dear to us as a person, a tender friend who will be able to give valuable advice and, drawing attention to a mistake, play the role of an attentive, gracious host and storyteller, as well as a simple commentator on the amazing building process, who knows how to fulfill desires that seem impossible.
However, until we were able to see you in your family environment, we knew you only in half and therefore we are grateful to you for giving us the opportunity to supplement our understanding of you by introducing us to your home, a sweet, magical, tastefully equipped environment , with your closest, most dear to you, first of all with your esteemed wife and mother.
How good we felt among such close friends. Our entire delegation was delighted with everything you prepared for us. There were not enough words of surprise, praise, a number of members of the delegation for the first time witnessed such a reception, a high-level organization, as well as a level in relation to the specialty and in the field of politics, it can be said without exaggeration that 90% for the first time in their lives met with proverbial Armenian hospitality, such a warm, friendly welcome. There are no words to fully convey to you all the experiences and impressions, all the words of gratitude that we had to hear.
We ask you to accept our heartfelt, sincere gratitude in a form that is not capable of conveying everything we felt in our hearts and at the same time, assure your esteemed wife and your mother of our deep respect for them, convey our heartfelt greetings to your entire family in general, to everyone friends and co-workers - in a word, all those who treated us with such cordiality, spontaneity and touching love to tears.
Now it's your turn to come and visit us in Prague and we will feel happy if you grant us, in this way, at least partially reward you for what you have done for us. It is quite enough to call us by phone that you agree to come and we will immediately take measures to send you the necessary official invitation.
Once again, thank you very much for everything. In anticipation of our meeting soon - this time in Czechoslovakia, we remain with comradely greetings "
Libushe Gaykova, Secretary of the Central Committee of the ChNTO, Society for Agriculture
Josef Berdych, Secretary General of the Council of the Czech NTO
“Dear, dear Grant Petrovich, it has always been and happens in people's lives that it is necessary to make fatal decisions - and such a task was put forward by my fate the other day: I am leaving our scientific and technical society! And it is not surprising that at such moments memories of the past, of many events, of loved ones, dear people and friends come forward. How can I not remember you, dear Grant Petrovich, your wisdom, your friendship, your wonderful Motherland, your esteemed family. These recollections excite the soul all the more, because the present is in no way cheerful for me - there are worries.
Let me assure you that those friendly relations with you will remain forever in their original strength and I ask you, if you manage to visit our country, for example, on the waters in Karlovy Vary or on any other occasion, warn me so that I can meet with you. I can arrive by my own car, prepare a program for you and so on, there will always be time for this. Just in case, here is my private address and home phone number:
It is impossible for me not to believe that I will be given the opportunity to see you at least once in my life. For everything, for your friendship, cooperation, help and for everything else, I am forever grateful to you and respecting you "
Libushe Gaykova, Secretary of the Central Committee of the ChNTO, Society for Agriculture
“Finally, these days, the desire that I had for many years to visit the wonderful, beautiful, ancient, hospitable, Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic and its capital Yerevan has been realized. I heard a lot about this beautiful republic of the USSR in the West, and especially as a scientist and university professor, I read a lot and got acquainted with scientific achievements, I heard very good reports at the International Scientific Congresses of your scientists, who each time showed great attention and interest at large International scientific events . The results of scientific research by scientists of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Socialist Republic are a good example of how science can solve the most important problems in land reclamation to obtain fertile soils, as well as the intensive use of mineral fertilizers and other agrotechnical methods of iris modern mechanization to provide opportunities for obtaining the maximum yield of the best quality.
The scientific workers of the Institute in Yerevan headed by G.P. Petrosyan , a world-class scientist in science and practice in the field of saline soil reclamation, gave and showed sacredly. Reclaimed fields are crops of important agricultural crops. crops, these fields have excellent fruits, high yields of the best quality - this is the best proof of the right work of the scientists of this institute and its director, comrade G. Petrosyan. They considered science with practice to be the best way, and therefore, for these successes in the science of the institute, a special agency of the United Nations became interested and organized special International courses in the field of melioration of saline soils. The success and interest of the Institute at the international level were recognized as the best. The course participants confirmed that the Institute is an International Center for research and training in the field of melioration of saline soils.

“During the week, in discussions, laboratories and experimental fields, we got acquainted with a new methodology, a new system and a new approach to land reclamation. What we have learned here are the latest achievements in this field of scientific knowledge. On behalf of both Americas.
His Highness Minister of Agriculture, President of the Organizing Committee, Secretary General, Chairman of the Salt Soils Committee. I don't know if I can introduce many of the soil scientists of America, but I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Armenian government, the Saline Soils Subcommittee, the International Society of Soil Science and UNESCO. During this week, which is still ongoing, with discussions on theoretical issues in this auditorium and on practical issues during field visits, we learned about the advances made in the area of saline soils. We got acquainted with a new methodology, a new system, a new approach.
Once in my country I was talking to an old farmer in a former fertile alluvial valley on the Peruvian coast. He told me, "Salinity is like a sleeping giant. It can be awakened by irrigation." What we have learned here at the International Symposium is the latest advances in this field of scientific knowledge. We must fight this giant.
I had the opportunity to meet the most eminent soil scientists around the world and share with their opinions on various issues.
I also learned that friendship is the greatest value and must be preserved. Please accept my thanks for the hospitality in this country. Personal thanks to the Minister of Agriculture, the Organizing Committee represented by G.P. Petrosyan , the International Society of Soil Science, Secretary General Mr. Van Baren”

The opportunity to get acquainted in detail with the scientific achievements of our Armenian colleagues contributed to a better international understanding. Plus, the warm hospitality we all experienced makes this meeting in Yerevan an event not easy to forget. As many contributed to the success of the Symposium, I would like to thank them personally. I conclude and once again express my gratitude to the Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the Symposium, Professor Petrosyan, assuring him that mutual friendship will be eternal”
Van Baren, Holland. Secretary General of the International Soil Science Society
“Dear Professor Petrosyan! Upon my return to Holland, I would like to thank you again for the interesting and pleasant time I spent in Yerevan. I will always remember the Symposium and many friends from Armenia who organized it and helped us in many ways. The first day of the tour was wonderful and great was the demonstration of the experiments you are doing with soda soils. I really hope that you will continue this work for the benefit of agriculture and all the people of your country. I also enjoyed the second tour, especially because it gave me the opportunity to make new friends. If you or any of your staff ever come to Holland, please let me know, because I would really like them to feel at home with us, as we felt at home with you. With best wishes, yours sincerely"
Professor Buhring, Holland
“I highly appreciate the invitation of the Armenian Ministry of Agriculture to come to the Symposium, which is a good scientific contribution to the science of soda soil salinization. In addition to many discussions with friends, I really appreciate the excursion in the Ararat valley, because it was accepted but it was to see how reclamation is carried out in practice. It was a very interesting demonstration of the work done by our Armenian friends. The demonstration was great and I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to attend. I am also grateful to the Institute, where I was shown the soil work being done for the farm, which, in my opinion, is a research work for the applied purposes. Thank you again and I hope that some of my new friends will come to Holland one day to see our work. Welcome to all of you!!!"
Prof. Dr. Buhring, Holland
“I thank the Organizing Committee of the Symposium, headed by Professor Petrosyan, for the wonderful days spent!
I would like to say a lot about the strong impressions received from the nature, history and people of the Armenian country. But in my head thoughts fly in a swarm - Too many new and interesting things had to be seen and learned in this short period of time. Let's digest!
I am sure of one thing: time will pass, each of us overseas guests will again plunge into their everyday life, and many details of this meeting in Yerevan will gradually be erased from memory, and only one thing will remain - the cordial, good-natured, hospitable Armenian people, who managed their affectionate character through all adversities of its centuries-old history and stubbornly subjugating a difficult and stingy nature.
Once again, please accept my sincere gratitude for the sincere and generous reception!”
P.A. Yanitsky, Yerevan (Davis, CALIFORNIA, USA)
“Communication between scientists from all over the world for the exchange of thoughts is very desirable in our time. The Armenian Symposium is characterized by its universality, because scientists from all over the world take part in it. Therefore scientific contribution is based on mutual understanding between them. This will have a huge impact on the preparation of a map of soda salinity worldwide. This is confirmed by the organization.
Prof. Petrosyan and his staff have worked very diligently to make an excellent organization both in the classrooms and in the field trips. We can only thank you for your kind cooperation.”
Ricardo Grande, Spain
“This is the first and only research institute of soil science in the country, which, using the example of its farm, turns the scientific achievements of soil reclamation directly into practice. On a very difficult object of melioration of soda-saline lands, he achieved good results. All these achievements are the result of the hard and fruitful work of scientists and production workers of the Institute”
Representatives of the State Planning Commission, the Ministry of Agriculture, Soyuzvodproekt and Hydroproject of the USSR
“Dear Doctor Petrosyan!
On the occasion of my return to my duties in Cairo, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your amazing hospitality, which was extended during the Soda Salt Soil Reclamation and Development Symposium"
Taking into account the fact that the problems of saline soils are common in you and in the Middle East, I hope that an active program of information and experience exchange between our two countries will be carried out in the near future. Best wishes"
Sincerely yours, L.T.Kadri
“It gives me great pleasure to appreciate the hospitality extended to me and my colleagues by the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia. I am deeply impressed by the use of technology by Armenian scientists both in laboratories and in the fields, and their success in reclamation of saline soils. Australia is a far away country and many Australians don't know about Yerevan and I will be happy to be able to tell them about the work I have seen, the beautiful buildings, the friendliness and hospitality of the Armenian people.”

“The first thing that comes to my mind is great preparation. Every little detail has been superbly crafted. Fresh water was supplied to the pulpit for each speaker. Medical assistance, if necessary, which accompanied the sightseers to the fields. Running water brought to the picnic area for washing hands. Demonstration of field experiments on soil reclamation with sulfuric acid was excellent. All the machines clearly showed their work and we could even see how the acid was applied in the soil. Each participant was provided with a book of photographs showing operations.
It was an outstanding demonstration of science in practice. As for the presentations that were given, the translations were excellent and the electronic equipment worked perfectly.”
Don Kirkham, USA

“Meetings of this kind are, of course, desirable for soil scientists. I would like to take this opportunity to note that the Saline Soils Subcommittee has been of great help to us, the wonderful organization of Armenian Friends. I was really impressed by the personality of the organizers and the high quality of research done in this country. I hope that the contacts made possible in connection with the Symposium are just the beginning for more productive cooperation.”

“It is a great pleasure for me to express my sincere gratitude to our Armenian and Soviet hosts for the very well organized Symposium and for the excellent trips around Armenia, which showed us both the solution of the soil problem and the big picture and impressive historical places; and especially thank you for the hospitality in Yerevan, which I will remember for a long time"
Arnold Fink, Germany, Germany
“The symposium was very interesting and our hosts were very kind and attentive. I highly appreciate their courtesy and I consider this visit a happy one for me. Thank you very much, sincerely"
Kirk, Canada. Director of the experimental station
“The theme of the symposium is very good and well prepared. Armenian colleagues and successfully combine theoretical and practical issues of soda soil reclamation. In the experimental field of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, the participants had the opportunity to see the technological process of soda soil reclamation and the radical changes that occurred in soils as a result of reclamation work. Moreover, by applying these measures in production, the Armenian land reclamators managed to give more than 1000 hectares to the collective farms. We think that the experience of Armenian soil scientists is of great importance for the specialists who participate in this present congress. These experiments are also of interest for the melioration of saline and alkaline soils in Romania. Therefore, on behalf of the Romanian Society of Soil Scientists, we sincerely congratulate our Armenian colleagues and wish them further success. The work of the symposium was well combined with excursions, where the villages had the opportunity to get acquainted with the glorious history of the Armenian people, who have always fought for their independence”
Sandu and others, Romania
“I express my deepest gratitude to the Organizing Committee of the International Symposium on Soda Salinization of Soils, which gave us the opportunity to take part in this wonderful meeting, to get acquainted with the scientific experiences of Armenian soil scientists in the study and reclamation of soda solonetzes, to establish friendly relations with Soviet soil scientists and soil scientists from all over the world. We are very grateful for the wonderful reception in Armenia for everything that has been done to ensure that the symposium brings its great benefits to science and agriculture. International scientific cooperation is one way to develop mutual understanding among peoples and strengthen peace throughout the world. Solving the complex issues of providing humanity with adequate nutrition by increasing the fertility of soils, including saline ones, is one of the most important tasks. From this follows the importance of the successful holding of such meetings as the ending symposium. In particular, I would like to thank all the organizers of the symposium for the fact that they tried so successfully to acquaint us not only with the achievements of soil science in the Armenian SSR, but also with the wonderful nature of the country, with the difficult history of the Armenian people”
We, the participants of this symposium, got acquainted with the unsurpassed hospitality of the Armenian comrades. I am leaving for my homeland with a sincere feeling of gratitude in my heart and with the best impressions. I wish my Armenian colleagues great success in their work and all the best in their personal lives. Thank you very much for everything and goodbye"

“This meeting exceeded all my expectations both scientifically and socially. As a guest from a Western European country, I can say that the warm welcome and cordial attitude of the cheerful hosts of the conference exceeded my expectations. The leaders of the conference and their capable assistants showed talent in organizing the Symposium and created favorable conditions for the friendly relations and attention that made our stay here so unforgettable. I learned a lot and most importantly, made new friends in the Soviet Union. I am very happy and grateful for the impressions of the conference and the beautiful ancient inspiring country of Armenia. Thanks a lot!"

“The Syrian delegation, having familiarized themselves with your achievements, expresses its admiration and satisfaction, in particular, in the field of amelioration of soda salt marshes using chemical ameliorants and rightly considers Armenian scientists to be the pioneers of this method, which will be applied by scientists from other countries that have such a problem.
In addition to the above, we got acquainted with other advanced research in the field of fertilizer application, mineralogy and other land reclamation issues.
We highly appreciate and are proud of our friendship with the Armenian people.
We are confident that the ties of friendship between the Syrian and Arab people and the people of Armenia will continue to develop for the benefit of our peoples.”
Dr. Georges Somy. Head Department of Irrigation and Drainage of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Syrian Arab Republic.
Dr. Farooq Al Shawa. Head of the Department of Land Reclamation, Damascus University
“Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues. We express our deep gratitude to the organizers of the symposium, which was held at a high scientific level. We are all full of impressions. We know Armenians from France. But what we saw here was amazing. Yerevan is one of the modern cities in the world with a unique architecture. We are full of impressions from visiting the Institute of Soil Science, a scientific center well equipped with modern equipment. It is amazing how it became possible in ten years of existence to create such an institution, which can be envied by any of the institutions with a hundred-year history.
The Institute not only develops serious scientific problems, but also provides real assistance to farmers. We are very pleased with our visit to the reclamation station, this is an exemplary scientific institution. For the first time, we saw the practical development of soda salt marshes, the tour was brilliantly organized, the demonstration of convincing scientific data and experimental fields gave us confidence about the possibility of developing soda salt marshes.
Now, at the University of Paris, I can show students photographs of reclaimed soda salt marshes.
Monsieur Petrosyan, I don't know how to express my gratitude to you, you are a brilliant organizer and scientist. We understand how much effort has been invested in organizing such an institute and symposium. The hospitality of Armenians is fantastic.
We will be happy to host you at home"
Jaubert. Academician of the French National. Academy of Sciences Director of the Paris Soil Institute
“Your Highness, Mr. President of the Symposium, dear colleagues in the Presidium, dear colleagues, ladies and gentlemen. Coming from the northwestern country of Europe, I have the honor to speak on behalf of this continent and I want to thank our Armenian colleagues for the very good Symposium they offered us. This is a very difficult task, but I hope that my sincerity will cover the paucity of words. I believe that in the field of saline soils, and in soil science in general, you have great achievements here. We have heard wonderful reports here and we have seen how much attention was given to all the speakers in an always overcrowded hall. Starting from the reception of guests in Moscow with greetings and flowers, to the arrangement, registration, secretariat, distribution of reports, translations. The organization of the symposium was excellent. Excursions, opera, wonderful work that we saw at the Reclamation Experimental Station and amazing Armenian monuments, landscape, including Lake Sevan and your wonderful cognac. Entertainment program, melody and sensitivity of Armenian music. The kindness and cordiality shown by our hosts and those who hold high positions and those who are in low positions. I am sure that all this will forever be sealed in our hearts. However, I believe that in addition to scientific achievements, we have achieved the greatest success here in the field of friendship and peace between peoples. Therefore, I want to commend all my Armenian colleagues for what they have done for the success of the Symposium.
Your Highness and the President of the Symposium, I would like to focus the gratitude of the European countries represented here to the outstanding scientist and the most pleasant person of this meeting, Professor Dr. G.P. Petrosyan. In my words towards him, I put great joy, our most sincere thanks and best wishes for the successful continuation of work in the field of soil science in Armenia and the USSR. Thank you"

“Thank you, Mr. Chairman, for giving me the opportunity to say a few words about my impressions of the Symposium. As we all know, irrigated saline lands worldwide represent one third of the total land area. Another significant fact is that irrigated drylands and semi-desert areas are mainly located in developed countries, where the population develops and improves
these areas. The convening of the Symposium here in Yerevan, in the Armenian SSR was timely, especially in the view that the FAO Representative, Mr. Elgabali, mentioned here. Last week we gathered to confer on the technical problems of land and water use in the Middle East. At that meeting, the main emphasis was placed mainly on the problem of saline soils. That is why I say that our Symposium here in Yerevan is extremely timely, both in terms of how we will cooperate and exchange views both on the issues of the Symposium discussion and on
future activities of the commission for the use of land and waters of the Middle East.
At the end of the report, I want to express in words what actually cannot be expressed in words. Words cannot express the feelings and hospitality that were shown towards us here in Yerevan. This can be attributed to the excellent preparation of the Organizing Committee, headed by the Minister of Agriculture of the Armenian SSR and Dr. Petrosyan and Dr. Sabolch. Thanks to them, we had the opportunity to meet and exchange views and feel their hospitality. Thank you for everything"
Qadri, FAO, Iraq
"Ladies and gentlemen. To all that we have heard here, I want to add again and again the words of sincere gratitude to the Minister of Agriculture of the Soviet Union, Mr. Artyushin, his representative here, the Minister of Agriculture of the ArmSSR. It is a great honor that the Minister of the Republic is here among us.
We are deeply grateful to Professor Petrosyan and his colleagues and deeply indebted to those who took part in the preparation of the Symposium. First of all, I must mention UNESCO and FAO, but of course many scientists and non-scientists have done their best to prepare the Symposium. Many scientists are soil scientists of the Institute of Soil Science in Yerevan, soil scientists of the Institute. Dokuchaev in Moscow and many in the secretariat, our talented translators, electronics specialists and others. We are indebted to them.
The fact that outstanding scientists have gathered in Yerevan is a great success. These are people who occupy a dominant position in the field of saline soils. I must sincerely thank you for your patience and your work, for your messages and work in preparing the soil map. I express my gratitude to the compilers of the soil map. Those who contributed and did a lot for the preparation of the soil map are now present here”
Sabolch I.
“I am very glad that I could visit the Institute again and the reclamation work in the fields. Purposeful work and consistency were crowned with complete success. There is no such complex melioration of soda lands as in Armenia anywhere in the world. Therefore, I hope for further dissemination of these results and wish dear G.P. Petrosyan and his staff new successes and happiness.”
Sabolch I.
“From the moment of my arrival in Yerevan and throughout my stay in Armenia, I was amazed and touched by the courtesy and cordiality with which we were received. I am very touched by the care that the responsible persons of the organizing committee have shown us.
I followed with great interest all the reports of the remarkable specialists of different nations, but I regret that the lack of time did not allow for longer discussions. I especially appreciated the excursion that we made on Wednesday to the experimental reclamation station, during which we had the opportunity to see the important and effective work carried out by Soviet scientists in the field of development of saline soils.
On behalf of the Director General of UNESCO, I congratulate my Soviet colleagues on the impeccable organization of this symposium and thank you for the warm welcome.”
Olla, UNESCO
“Having visited blessed Armenia again, I was amazed by the growth of culture and prosperity. But as a soil scientist, I was most impressed by the experimental farm of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia, and the institute itself, with its modern equipment and the ability to solve major scientific, theoretical and practical problems.
I believe with great confidence that the director of the institute, G.P. Petrosyan, most clearly showed what theory is and that the latter is a consequence of solving practical problems. This is the most correct way of developing Dokuchaev soil science.
I would like to wish the institute and its staff success in their noble and important work, as well as happiness and well-being in solving all the problems that stand in their way. Your »

“My Armenian friends living in Egypt work in various fields of science, and the most remarkable of them, Dr. Halajyan, has been working in the field of soda salinization of soils for over 40 years. He has many published works on the chemistry of mineral waters, the chemistry of soils with soda salinity, which we always refer to. When I arrived here and saw the Armenians, they reminded me of my Armenian friends from
Alexandria and Cairo, and it seemed to me that I was in Egypt. The same weather, even the sun is almost the same. Onions, radishes, which are always on all tables in any house in Egypt, restaurants and the music that we listened to yesterday at the opera and musical instruments that we played.
Old canon. Everything is very similar. And therefore suggests that between the people of this part of the world and the people of the Middle East there is a close relationship. Much in common in culture and history. That's why I feel at home here.
As for the impressions of the Symposium, I must confess that the reports of Armenian scientists in the field of saline soils are not very accessible to many of us, probably due to the fact that they are published mainly in Russian. But what I saw both on the field and in the laboratory was done exemplarily by Armenian soil scientists, at the highest level.
I will try to keep in touch with this very important research, even through the Soviet embassy in Cairo. They can help translate the most important reports in the area of saline soils and we can learn a lot of what you have achieved.
The organization of the Symposium was at a high level, it is the best we have ever seen at such meetings. Starting today, I have already begun to worry. How will the next UAR meeting go, will we be able in any respect to approach the model that you achieved at your meeting.
Perhaps we will invite some of you to help us organize it. In fact, in the Middle East area, we consider the problem of salinity to be of paramount importance. Neither fertility, nor chemistry, nor physics, but above all salinity. We understand that if we ever succeed in raising soil productivity, we will first of all have to reduce its salinity. Of course, the decrease in salinity is closely related to the level of groundwater and drainage, so they are conditioned. I am sure that you have made great strides in this area.
I intend to inform my colleagues about the results you have achieved and the conclusions you have reached in solving these problems.
I want to note your hospitality. In fact, I want to repeat the previous speaker, my colleague, who mentioned your hospitality. It is not new for the Armenians and for the Soviet people. Wherever you go in the Soviet Union, you are greeted hospitably everywhere. I assume that this is peculiar to the East? This is not a discovery, not news, it is hereditary. It is not acquired, not temporary, not artificial. Being hospitable is justified by culture, lifestyle. It is also part of the history, art, culture, which I am glad to say have not changed even with modern technology.
To the Organizing Committee, I wish to express my gratitude for what they have done for the precise and thorough preparation in every detail of meetings, excursions, preparations for the departure of guests. All this takes a huge amount of time.
And many have probably spent days and nights preparing for this week. Many who worked day and night, typists, secretaries who met and distributed guests, those who ensured the success of this Symposium with their work, remained out of sight.
As for Professor Petrosyan, he is the brain of the Organizing Committee and the greatest merit rightfully belongs to him.
His Excellency Minister of Agriculture is in charge of the agriculture of the republic and I am sure that without his support very little would have been done, because we know very well that without the help of ministers little can be achieved. I will not speak about our colleague Dr. Szabolcz, the chairman of the Symposium, who devoted his time and health to social work in this field of science. The best recognition of his merits is the gratitude of his colleagues.
Once again, I want to thank you all and wish you new meetings. Thank you"
Prof. Elgabali, Minister of Agriculture of Egypt
“I feel great joy to be in the beautiful city of Yerevan among sincere friends and brothers and where all the traditions and customs are similar to the traditions and customs of your people in the ARE. This similarity is not accidental, but it just shows that there has been brotherhood and love between our peoples since ancient times.
I will never forget the days I spent in the beautiful city of Yerevan, where I got to know the life of the Armenian people, their desires and dreams very closely.
When a person follows the history of Armenia, he admires the magnificent successes and great progress of the Armenian people in a relatively short time, despite the harsh conditions that faced this people, especially at the beginning of the 20th century.
However, I was struck by one phrase written in a book about Armenia, which says that the real enemies of the Armenian people are "rocks and stones." This phrase testifies that Armenia is a country of the world and that it has no traditional enemies, and at the same time shows the resilience of the Armenian people in the assimilation of nature for the benefit of man.
As for the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, in my opinion, this is a symbol of high organization. This institute studies important applied issues that tend to increase soil productivity, which is very valuable for every Armenian.
I am very pleased to have been given the opportunity to visit the soil enzymology laboratory, as this laboratory is currently one of the best laboratories in the world in this field of science.
Finally, I sincerely wish all the staff of the Institute the greatest success for the benefit of the Armenian people. I am very grateful for the opportunity to visit. Long live the Armenian people!”
Hassan Moawad. National Research Center, Cairo (ARE)
“From the bottom of my heart I express my gratitude to all the staff of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry. For 10 days, I learned about the achievements in the scientific and practical work of the Institute, which made a great contribution to obtaining agricultural products, about the efficiency and devotion of the people. In addition, I want to express admiration for the hospitality and great achievements in the development of the culture of the Armenian people. Thank you for everything and good luck to you all"
Luis Berasategui, Assoc. University of Buenos Aires, Argentina
“Dear Doctor Petrosyan. Given your great contribution and international recognition in the field of soil science, I am very pleased to ask you to send an article for "Advances in Soil Science" / Volume 2, 1984 /.
"Advances in Soil Science" intends to bring together the latest information in a particular field of soil science and publish critical "State of Science" papers that are international in scope and scope. For the sake of brevity, I report that the style and form of the papers are consistent with the requirements of "advancements in agronomy".
In the first issue, we intend to publish articles on soil salinity and salinity-related issues. Therefore, I propose the following title for your article: "Melioration of saline soils in the USSR." But the title can be changed according to your wishes.
I hope that you will accept our offer and send the article no later than January 31st, 1985, with a passport size photograph and a short biographical sketch. It is advisable to obtain written confirmation from you. Best wishes"
I.S. Gupta. Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal, India. Editor of "Advances in Soil Science"
“I was greatly impressed by both the results of scientific research and applied work aimed at the practical use of these results. All this is highly commendable. Your institute has clearly shown that the technology you have created for reclamation of soda solonetzes-salt marshes can be used on the widest scale in agriculture and has proved its effectiveness when introduced into the practice of collective farms and state farms. All this is an outstanding example of the rational implementation of technologies worked out in laboratories in practical agriculture. I congratulate your institute on these outstanding achievements.”
Prof. Yadav. Director of the Central Research Institute of India for planting soils.
“It was really a real pleasure to visit the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry. We heard a lot about this institute from other scientists and read a lot in the literature, but now for the first time we were lucky to see what work has been done on the improvement of saline soils.
This is indeed a great achievement, and above all because this work was carried out in the fields. We have the same problems in India and the visit turned out to be extremely useful for us, because we had the opportunity to exchange views, we received full information about the work carried out by the scientists of the institute. We met with wonderful cordiality and hospitality while working at the institute, visiting various laboratories and visiting the experimental station of the institute. We will remember our stay at the Institute for a long time and wish the scientists of the Institute great creative success in the future.”
India, Director of the Central Research Institute for Soil Salinization Control, Karnal, Yadav

“I am extremely grateful to the Center for International Projects for inviting me to participate in your courses as a lecturer, which gave me the opportunity to share my views and talk with you about what is the subject of hard work in India and what is currently happening in my homeland. one of the main directions of attack on difficult saline soils.
I mean difficult saline soils, which are currently being carried out on a wide front in my country with the aim of providing its population with agricultural products. As a citizen of my country and on its behalf, I would like to sincerely thank the distinguished Minister of Agriculture of the Armenian SSR for the high appreciation he gave to the work of Indian scientists engaged in agriculture and for her kind words in general about our science and about my country as a whole.
Prior to India's independence, sometime around 1950, the country's total food production was 50 million tons. According to statistics for the year before last, agricultural production amounted to 131 million tons, which is more than enough to meet the demand for food products in my country. Nevertheless, I would like to take into account the fact that the peoples inhabiting India are growing at a very fast pace. Therefore, this is not the limit. In the implementation of difficult technical and scientific tasks in the field of land reclamation affected by varying degrees of salinity, and in the field of the use of saline mineralized waters for irrigation purposes, we have to carry out hard work in order to develop methods and techniques, as well as practical techniques and methods to achieve a great effect in both areas of work.
I arrived and started participating in these courses at the final stage in Yerevan. In my opinion, these courses were well planned, well-structured and possessed a sufficient breadth of scientific coverage and issues, in the sense that the students were offered knowledge on the whole range from the results of fundamental and basic research and the general theoretical characteristics of certain types of soils to specific laboratory studies, already conducted on an industrial scale in the field, and from this point of view, the courses were built in the most effective way, because private traders had the opportunity to see the most important thing - this is the practical implementation, application and implementation of all these achievements in agricultural practice.
The most characteristic features of the practical implementation of scientific achievements in Armenia, in the country, the most impressive side of practical work in the field of desalinization of saline soils, is the large scale of the introduction of theoretical achievements into practice and a demonstration in front of the whole people of how they become fertile and begin to contribute to the cause. providing the population with agricultural products of the land, which from time immemorial were considered barren, difficult, impossible for melioration and therefore waste. Now these lands serve for the benefit of people.
A notable feature of these courses is that both participants and invited lecturers were representatives of various countries and continents. This made it possible to create the widest range of coverage of scientific and practical issues in the course of the courses. We saw with our own eyes the work that is carried out at the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, headed by the director, Dr. Petrosyan Grant, which is carried out in laboratories and then introduced into field practice. All the work of this institute is an outstanding example of a successful and effective combination of theoretical research with laboratory experiments and then practical implementation. An outstanding feature of the work that is being carried out in areas of interest to us in Yerevan is the scientific cooperation of a number of scientific institutions of the republic, such as the Institutes of Water Problems and Hydroponics, etc.
I express my deep conviction that it is precisely this cooperation and joint work with other institutions, established, sometimes with redoubled, tireless energy of Dr. Petrosyan, that is the main guarantee that scientific problems will be carried out with an integrated approach and that the solution of these problems will be beneficial for all participants. these developments. And if our courses were crowned with success, then this happened because we received answers to all the questions asked and received clarifications on all those Moments that caused us doubts on the one hand, and on the other hand, due to the fact that not sparing our own time and showing a sincere and uncommon personal interest in what we were doing throughout our stay in Yerevan, Dr. Petrosyan accompanied us everywhere. He was with us in the field, he did not leave us for a minute and never once refused to give an answer or explain something that caused bewilderment or doubt among the course participants. I am extremely grateful to the staff of the Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Socialist Republic and the Center for International Projects, and, in particular, to the head of these courses, Ms. and sincere attitude towards all participants. She went into every detail and showed concern for all the participants.
And in conclusion, I want to say that for me personally, my stay in Yerevan was inhumanly pleasant and informative, very useful. Therefore, I consider myself obliged to once again thank the leadership of the Center and Dr. Petrosyan for the opportunity.
Speech by the director of the Institute of Saline Soils, Karnal, India, prof. Yadava
“The work carried out at the Institute's reclamation station deserves high praise. They have received wide and effective industrial application. I would like to express my confidence that with the active assistance of the Institute, the irrigators will turn the Ararat Valley into the pearl of Armenia.”
E. Alekseevsky, Minister of Land Reclamation and Water Resources of the USSR
“We got acquainted with interest with scientific research and experimental farming of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry. received wide and effective industrial application. I would like to express my confidence that with the active assistance of the Institute, the irrigators will turn the Ararat Valley into the pearl of Armenia.”
E. Alekseevsky, Minister of Land Reclamation and Water Resources of the USSR
“The institute is characterized by a deep combination of theoretical research with the development and implementation in practice of the fundamental technology of chemical reclamation of solonetzes-salt marshes. It would not be an exaggeration to say that in the world practice of melioration of such difficultly reclaimed soils as soda, this experience is one of the most successful.
I. Gerasimov. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR
“In the period from October 3 to October 13, 1980, part of the theoretical and practical classes were held on the territory of the Armenian SSR with
“Armenian Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry has a short history, but excellent results, which would be the envy of an institution with a longer lifespan. Scientific creativity is a complicated matter, but the staff of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Armenian Republic, under the leadership of the remarkable researcher Grant Petrovich Petrosyan, turned out to be able not only to master this matter, but most importantly, to translate, put the theoretical provisions into useful practical conclusions and, on the basis of an integrated approach, solve the most difficult task of creating cultivated fertile soils on the basis of "dead" salt marshes. Soda salt marshes differ little from the primary barren parent rocks of the dry steppe, moreover, they contain a significant amount of sodium salts. And this barren land in the hands of remarkable researchers becomes fruitful and annually gives its fruits to people, we with great attention they examined the crops of various crops, beautiful gardens and tasted their fruits.
An original and comprehensive approach allowed the team under the leadership of G.P. Petrosyan to create a new ground, i.e. scientists of the institute showed in their fields how to activate the soil-forming process and achieve brilliant results in a short period of time under the conditions of severe natural factors.” widely used not only in our country, but throughout the world.
I wish the staff of the Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry and its talented leader G.P. Petrosyan new creative successes both in the theory and practice of dry farming, especially in the transformation of solonchaks into highly fertile cultivated soils.
Vice President of VASKhNIL V. Pannikov
“I got acquainted with the work carried out by the Armenian Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry. Previous knowledge about the activities of this institute on a very difficult for many regions of the country and the world, a very important problem - the development of soda solonetzes-salt marshes, was supplemented by what was seen in the case. Thank you very much for what you have done, I wish the staff of the Institute new successes in their work, more active implementation of their ideas and practical developments into practice. I hope that the technical capabilities of our state and the original ideas of scientists will bring great results in the future. All the best to you, dear comrades"
I. Kuznetsov. Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the USSR
“This is the first and only research institute of soil science in the country, which, using the example of its farm, turns the scientific achievements of soil reclamation directly into practice. At a very difficult object of reclamation of soda-saline lands, it achieved high results, which are expressed in a return on investment in 2-3 of the year.
All these achievements are the result of hard and fruitful work of scientists and production workers of the institute.
Nothing so convincingly proves the results of the achievements of science as a clear example of the economic activity of the institute. With deep respect for your work"
Azarov. GlavPEU MVH USSR
“The Institute created a unique monument of science and modern culture of irrigated agriculture, it showed how lifeless lands should be turned into highly fertile ones, how to create joy and prosperity of life, where it did not exist.
I heard and read a lot about the achievements of the Institute, but what I saw when visiting the reclamation station surpasses any idea of the results of bringing the achievements of science to life. Using the example of its experimental station, the Institute showed how it is necessary to turn lifeless lands into highly productive ones, how to create joy and prosperity in life, where it was not there before.
I admire the fact that the institute is recreating the fertility of the soil - the basis for the existence of all life on earth. Armenia, the cradle of the most ancient civilization in the Caucasus, has many remarkable monuments of the history of its development. The employees of the Institute erected a unique monument of science about the modern culture of irrigated agriculture, which did not previously exist either in Egypt, or in Mesopotania, or in Carthage...”
I. Rabochev. Academician of VASKhNIL and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan
“Today I got acquainted with those works of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, the purpose of which is to make the saline lands of Armenia useful. When our people were deprived of statehood, their lands were left without an owner, turned into a salt marsh and became deserted.
Today, the people are the masters of our land, and they are reviving these long-deserted territories.
The Institute is doing excellent and honest work, which is worthy of every praise. But he must reach his final goal: to turn all saline lands into highly fertile ones.
A lot has already been done. But our republic demands even more. Live, live long and go on until the end"
Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armed SSR Viktor Ambartsumyan.
“Familiarization with the experimental station of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry showed that in Armenia we have one of the world centers for comprehensive research and practical implementation of the most important problems of soil science and agrochemistry, created under the leadership of the founder of the institute, its director Grant Petrovich Petrosyan and the glorious staff of the institute.
We should be proud of this center, help this center, promote and implement its achievements, especially in the virgin saline lands of the native Armenian land.
We wish the outstanding scientist of advanced agriculture Grant Petrovich Petrosyan and the staff of the institute new and even greater success in their combat, life-affirming activities for the glory of our people"
Academician Arm.SOR A. Iosifyan.
